MID-FEBRUARY

A few more pics from the 365 project...  I am discovering that one of the first things I think of each morning is, "What will my picture be today?" -- then finding myself absolutely delighted if I come upon a photo I didn't expect (even when I miss the photo, as today, when I couldn't get my phone out fast enough to take the pic of the red-tailed hawk hovering 20' overhead).  The whole process certainly keeps my eyes open!

Here we go with more February:

February 13:

All parties, all the time.  That's what the weekend was like.   I didn't eat one single "real" meal, and ate most of them on my feet.  I wish I could have taken a photo of the spread at the school function where I served as a hostess -- the filet mignon on toast points, the miniature crab cakes, the shiitake mushroom egg rolls, the mini-cheesecakes.  But since I was a host and it was a smallish event, I thought it would be tacky.  Instead, I snagged a photo of my plate at Care Crawford's 25th anniversary party -- yet another event at which I stood to eat.  But you know, I love party food.  So it was a great weekend.

February 14:

"Jump me"?  Really?  That's what candy hearts say these days?  ...I liked the people who commented, "I sure hope those kids are playing checkers."  I sure hope the teachers whose kids were handing these out thought of that!

February 15:

I hoped we were done with elaborate homework crafts projects when we finished the almost-life-size model of a California mission in 4th grade (complete with real wood floors -- Lee, um, I mean Sabrina, got a bit carried away.  And yes, we still have the mission.)....  Now the assignment is to make a car out of food.  I can report that this car rolled a successful 1.9 meters after getting to the bottom of the ramp (some cars fell apart on the ramp).  I still say cucumber slices would have made better wheels, though.

February 16:

Is it real or is it Memorex?... Our cat Leia has a plush rose that she carts around the house, leaving as a gift for whomever she misses at the moment.  We often wake to find it outside our bedroom door.  Well, Cory got a very similar rose at his play last weekend, which created quite the dilemma for Leia.  She kept leaping up to the piano, where the rose was in water, to check it out.  You can see why.

February 17:

On Thursdays this semester, I teach for 6 straight hours with only one 10 minute break, during which time I have to answer students' questions, run to the restroom, and change buildings.  The only place for me to grab lunch is at the Coffee Bean in the film school's main building.  Look at this line (swollen by interlopers from the dental school across the street).  This is why I don't eat lunch on Thursdays.

February 18:

I've had problems before with my iPhone when trying to take photos from darkness into light (as when sitting in an audience).  But I like this one anyway.  Here's Cory at his school Jazz Combo Concert, playing in a combo that had a lot more shredding than it did jazz, playing songs from Blue Öyster Cult, Def Leppard, and Led Zeppelin (not to mention Cory's re-orchestration of the Super Mario Bros. theme).  Here's Cory on the bass, singing "Don't Fear the Reaper."

February 19:

Geometry threw up on Cory's new pants.  He got a hole in his old black jeans, needed new ones.  He insisted that he had to have these as well.  Since he plans to become a rock star, I'm sure they'll come in handy.

EATING THE OSCARS 2011

We were able to revive our Oscars viewing party last year after a few years hiatus, and this year we'll do it again on a cozy scale. I think it's fun to watch these kinds of events with a group of people, and if people would normally wear their pj's to watch at home, they're free to wear them to our place.

The real fun, though, is the food. We have a potluck, where everyone is asked to bring food representing the nominated movies -- any of the movies, not just the Best Picture nominees.

In previous years, we've had freeze-dried ice cream for Apollo 13. We've had hot dogs and Bud Lite for Jerry Maguire. We had doughnuts for "Lard" of the Rings (and the next year, we had two piles of doughnuts stacked high for "Lard" of the Rings: The Two Towers. We've had apples for Good Will Hunting ("I got her phone number. How about them apples?").

We've had haggis for Braveheart, iceberg lettuce for Titanic, cold salmon for March of the Penguins, and a re-creation of the Normandy Invasion sculpted in meat loaf and mashed potatoes (complete with little tiny soldiers) for Saving Private Ryan. And the years of Chocolat and Julie & Julia made for very good parties indeed.

This year? Still coming up with ideas. We usually do all the drinks, and we're definitely having butterbeer for HP7.1, having test-tasted the recipe successfully for the Superbowl.

But help us out: What other great food ideas are out there? Below is the list of nominated feature-length movies. Be inspired! (And if you're feeling the need of a cozy Oscar party with interesting food, well, you know where to reach me.)

MORE FEBRUARY

I wish I could say something trenchant about Egypt.

I thought of writing a Valentine's Day post (about how much I hated Valentine's Day when I was single and it seemed like a conspiracy, and about how much I just don't care after so many years of marriage when it just seems like an advertising gimmick).

I thought of rhapsodizing about watching Cory perform in the school play.

But the reality is, I have pages due today, and all my writing mojo really needs to go in that direction.  So I'm afraid all I have to offer is more photos....

February 6:

We plan to make butterbeer for our Oscar party (celebrating the 2 nominations of HP7:1), and decided to do a dry run for the Superbowl.  This is a back-engineered version of the butterbeer recipe used at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.  It is very complicated to make, and *very* rich, but quite delicious.  And yes, it does include butter.

February 7:

I've heard so many times that more white cars are sold than any other color.  Since I would never even consider buying a white car, I don't always believe it.  But then I see something like this...

February 8:

Cory got his first college recruiting letters today.  Carnegie-Mellon and the University of Evansville.  How is this even possible?

But he's only a sophomore! on 365 Project

February 9:

Writing is so often fueled by junk food and diet soda.  But every now and then, one needs to be overtly healthy.

February 10:

Not the photo I planned for today.  But driving home from USC, I was about 20' behind this accident.  A guy shot out of a side street and slammed into this poor woman driving quite legally, causing her to veer off and smash into a light pole.  Her air bag saved her life.  I took some photos for her before the tow truck hauled her car away.  Having had a car totaled 2 years ago after an idiot took his eyes off the road, I know that this particular idiot has no idea how much continuing grief he has just caused.

February 11:

Is there anything more wonderful than watching your kids come into their own?  Here's Cory onstage in the Harvard-Westlake winter play, "The Servant of Two Masters."  An updated version of an old commedia, Cory promised it would be the funniest thing we had ever seen, and he very may well be right.

February 12:

Cory got to die onstage in "The Servant of Two Masters."  Twice each night, in fact.  Once stabbed by a sword, once having his throat slit with a meat cleaver.  Good times.  In death #1, he got a death soliloquy -- in this case, the lyrics to "Corner of the Sky" from Pippin.  I wasn't supposed to snap this shot (I got a dirty look from the director), so I'm glad I even got it in focus!

HAPPY FEBRUARY

Some more photos from the 365Project....

January 31:

Writing under a deadline is a dangerous thing.  Dangerous because sometimes munching helps the process, and one doesn't always keep track of what one munches.  Fortunately, we have Trader Joe's mini-peanut butter cups.  Even better than Reese's.  And only 7 calories per.  Aaaah.  I can get back to work now.

February 1:

It used to be, when I went to my hair salon in Beverly Hills, the rack where people hang their clothes when they change into smocks was packed.  But apparently haircuts are one of those things one can give up in a recession.  Back in the day, they'd sometimes run out of hangers.  Not anymore.

Lonely Tuesday on 365 Project

February 2:

Our cat Leia has become very clingy since her brother died in September.  If she's not on my lap (sometimes trying to get between me and my laptop), here's her new favorite spot:  Under the stained glass lamp.  In the warmth.  And in the spotlight.

February 3:

It's back!  After at least two years, maybe three, Costco has started selling their prepared meat loaf and mashed potatoes again!  We've been waiting.  And since I don't cook on days I teach, there's a ready consumer for it at our house.

Meat and Potatoes on 365 Project

February 4:

I could post pictures of Chinese Magnolia trees for weeks.  At least two weeks, since their flowering season is so short.  This is my favorite tree.  Someday I'll have one of my own, and I'll just sit and watch it bloom for two straight weeks.

February 5:

Happy birthday to me!  My writers group surprised me with a little chocolate lava cake (which we all shared).  Absolutely perfect, since I'm writing a movie about a volcano.  Delicious, too!  A happy birthday, indeed.

ANDREA'S WRITING ROUTINES

I was interviewed for the site Routines for Writers some time back, but whatever I said, it couldn't possibly be as valuable as Andrea Nasfell's interview this week.

Andrea has great ideas for getting past that, "Gee, I should be writing, but..." moment and just getting it done!  I love her comment:
...The most common question I get asked about my writing is “How do you get it all done?”....  The asker is usually someone without kids, maybe single, often unemployed, and in my head I think, “With all that time, how do you not get it all done?” You are not waking up to a three-year-old sitting on your head, racing to get everyone to school like a NASA shuttle lift-off, running home to cram some writing in before hustling back to preschool pick-up, Brownies and pep squad.
She's a terrific writer, and she gets it done, even with all that "real life" stuff on her plate.  Click over and read the interview.
